As a 90s baby, the 1995 Mortal Kombat film has coloured my impression of the franchise. What this means, besides being able to recite a cult classic movie, is that I have a very specific idea of what Johnny Cage should be like.
Seeing the first Mortal Kombat 2 teaser of Cage with nothing save his obnoxious belt buckle to give away his identity, helped me feel confident that The Boys’ Karl Urban will do a fine job of embodying materialistic arrogance.

Others agree. “Based on his performance in The Boys alone I think he's the perfect choice,” posted one fan, before adding, “Even if he was just Butcher with an American accent it'd be perfect.”

Unfortunately, not everyone is as sold on the idea as we are, with one fan arguing that Urban will struggle to “pull off” Cage’s funny side. “Me personally, [I] am not a huge fan of the casting choice, I feel like they should’ve gone with Ryan Reynolds or Chris Evans or any other actor that has the vibe of Johnny Cage. But hey, who knows, he might do a good job.”
Perhaps Reynolds and Evans are the more obvious choice to some, but they could have risked being too comedy-focused, with Evans a little too boy-next-door to really pull off Cage’s demeanour. However, it won’t be until we see the trailer for ourselves that we can better determine how Urban will fare.
A film trailer that’s “months” away according to the film’s producer Todd Garner. Much like before GTA VI’s big trailer reveal, we know little about the details of Mortal Kombat 2, which only makes us want it more.

We do, however, know that Urban will be joined by an array of familiar faces, including Uncharted’s Tati Gabrielle, Falcon and The Winter Soldier’s Desmond Chiam, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Adeline Rudolph.
