The chaos surrounding The Batman Part II has really taken me by surprise.
If you’ve seen The Batman, you’ll know it’s positively fantastic.
In fact, I’d go as far as saying that it’s my favourite Batman film; there’s something about its gritty, messy take on Gotham that feels so true to what Batman is.

Matt Reeves clearly had a vision that he so perfectly brought to life and so I perhaps wrongly assumed that that vision extended beyond the initial film to a sequel.
While a sequel is on the cards though, it doesn’t appear that Reeves is as organised about it as I assumed he might be.
The Batman Part II was originally scheduled to launch on 3 October 2025, before it was subsequently delayed to 2 October 2026.
It’s since been delayed again to 3 October 2027.

To add to fans’ pain, it’s now been revealed that the film’s script hasn’t even been locked down yet.
We did receive spin-off The Penguin which was incredible.
Warner Bros. Pictures bosses Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy have confirmed that The Batman Part II’s script remains a work in progress, despite the first film landing three years ago.

Speaking to Deadline, Abdy said this: “We’re not in the weeds on the Batman stuff. It’s really James and Peter Safran who run DC. We have a bit of other collaboration with Matt Reeves, but Peter and James know he is a writer-directing auteur in his own right, and that it will come when he’s written his best Batman script and is ready.”
You can’t rush art, of course, but it is a tad concerning that Reeves is still working on the script.
As I said, The Batman launched three years ago and outside of his executive producing credits on Batman: Caped Crusader and The Penguin, Reeves hasn’t been working on anything else.
He must have a concept by now I’m imagining, especially as The Penguin appeared to tease what next lies in store.

A second season of the limited series isn’t currently planned, so I can only assume - and I’m about to mention a spoiler - that the teased Court of Owls is something that Reeves is planning to explore further in the mainline films.
We did believe that The Batman Part II’s delay was down to actor Robert Pattinson’s busy filming schedule, but now it’s clear that there are multiple factors at play.
Let’s hope everything comes together for that 2027 release date.
