The year isn’t over yet, but gamers have already declared the best PlayStation 5 game of the year. It’s God of War Ragnarök. Once again, I lack any ability to build suspense, though dragging out the results wouldn’t change them. But enough about my failings, let’s get back to the most important game on PS5 so far.
Before you all start crying that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 should be top or, at the very least, in the running, the gamers of Reddit are way ahead of you; Spidey and others also got a lot of votes, but it was the gruff god that stole the show.
Bow down to the supermacy that is the God of Ragnarök story trailer
Kratos has been making a name for himself since 2005 when the first GoW title launched. Since then, everyone’s favourite moody god has gone from strength to strength, although his parenting skills are up for debate. The world’s best father he isn’t, but Kratos is beating Spider-Man back despite GoW being the older game (though only by a year).

When it was announced that GoW was coming to the PS5, some fans went so far as to purchase a new console just so they could experience the epic saga that this the sprawling landscape of Norse mythology. “I bought a PS5 to play Ragnarök after having played GoW on PC,” admitted ordinaryRedd1t0r, who was quickly followed by a post from another user declaring, “GoW is on a different level than the rest.” They added, “I'd go GoW, R&C [Rachet & Clank], S2 [Marvel’s Spider-Man 2], Horizon.”
That rundown of the suggested top games is pretty similar for other fans, with a few minor tweaks that put Spidey before Horizon but after Rachet & Clank; basically, minor differences in opinion. One post that did go its own way, though, was from DistinctEditor3081, who simply positioned Rachet & Clank as the best PS5 title. It’s bold. It’s daring. It’s… not what I’d have done, but I admire their moxie!
Which game would you say has been the best so far? Maybe there’s a franchise we haven’t even considered, which is a completely foolish error on our part and on the Redditors’ as well.
