Couch multiplayer games used to be extremely common, almost to the point of it being unusual if a game didn’t have a two-player option. Nowadays it’s quite the opposite, save for some notable exceptions. One of those is It Takes Two, a game built from the ground up to be played with a buddy.
Right now this charming little game is available on Switch for just £20.99, down from £29.06 at Amazon. As well as having dedicated split-screen co-op, you also only need one copy to play online with a friend on another system.

The game follows two parents in the midst of a divorce, shrunk down to miniature sizes by a wish from their distraught child. As they take on a series of platforming challenges set against imaginative riffs on household environments, working together to overcome each obstacle, they slowly start remembering why they fell in love in the first place.
Even if the story doesn’t grab you, the gameplay almost certainly will - nabbing it Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2021. Every challenge requires both players to work together, whether it’s a simple case of one player opening a gate for another or something far more complex.
You’ll often be given different skills and abilities that complement each other but provide very different gameplay scenarios, meaning there’s loads of value in replaying the game with the roles reversed. The environments and challenges themselves are highly polished, often rivalling the likes of the Super Mario games for imagination and quality.
It should be noted that the game is exclusively playable by two players, and can’t be tackled solo. You’ll also need two sets of Joy Cons, so bear that in mind too.

At Amazon it’s got an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars from over 325 reviews, with many players loving the multiplayer-dedicated gameplay.
“Me and my partner love this game,” said one five-star review. “It’s great that you only need one copy to play together on two Switch consoles, unlike Mario Kart. It’s great fun and also challenging in places with the boss battles. There should be more games like this as it’s fun to work as a pair to complete challenges.”
“I bought this to play with my boyfriend and we have had so much fun and can’t put it down!” said another five out of five review. “He is a gamer whereas I am a more cosy game girl so I was worried about the level of difficulty but this really gets it just right.”
Another added: “Great two player game that me and my partner love playing together!”

Some have noted that, despite its cute aesthetic, the game has mature themes that might not be suitable for younger players: “One scene in particular was dark, violent and unnecessary. I would suggest anyone buying this game read reviews on the elephant scene before making a decision on whether or not they purchase this game.”
Others have lamented the fact there’s no option to play it alone: “It is almost impossible to play it by yourself (or we couldn’t figure out how to do it).”
For more multiplayer fun, Minecraft is a great choice at £21.99 right now. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is another easy recommendation at £42.99, with countless hours of racing to be had.
