When we think of Star Wars villains, we tend to go right to Darth Vader, or Palpatine, maybe Darth Maul, but there are many others.
One, who is only a passing moment in the long-running Star Wars story of the Skywalkers, is Watto.
Watto appeared in the first of the Star Wars prequels
Appearing in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Watto was the owner of slaves, these slaves being Anakin Skywalker and his mother Shmi.

Sure, he was a low level villain in his actions within the film, but the guy was a slave owner, that’s pretty damn villainous.
Anyway, it was recently thought that Darth Vader went back to his home planet and killed Watto for his treatment of him as a child.
This was shown in the Marvel comic Legacy of Vader, where Kylo Ren follows in his grandfather’s footsteps to learn more about the dark side icon.
In a new preview of issue two, it shows that Vader did indeed return and confront Watto, but he didn’t actually kill him.

Let’s be honest, it’s likely that Watto is still brown bread, because of the passing of time, but it’s important to know that he didn’t die at the hands of Vader.
As one fan over on Reddit notes, “Vader killing Watto for revenge would be an admission that he is still Anakin, Vader’s not going to do that.”
You’d think that the evil inside of Vader would push him to kill Watto without a second thought - this is the man who obliterated an entire planet.
However, the revelation shows that underneath the armour, Anakin remained a complex man.

In the extended universe, which is no longer canon since the Disney buyout, there were further allusions that Vader killed Watto, but this is the first canon acknowledgment of the situation.
Whether he was murdered, or died of old age, or in a pod-racing mishap, he died eventually, and that’s good. He was horrible.
