Back in the day, when Marvel Comics was in dire need of money and facing bankruptcy, they began selling off the film rights for a bunch of their characters.
X-Men went over to 20th Century Fox and, of course, Sony bought out Spider-Man. This meant that for years, Marvel couldn’t make films and pick from all of their characters.
Deadpool and Wolverine is the next big MCU film and it's out very soon
This has changed drastically in recent years since Marvel began its domination of the box office after the Disney buyout.

Speaking to ComicBook recently, Kevin Feige expressed that it has been a tough time for Marvel, “The frustration is when you don't have access to all of your characters.”
Feige went on to explain, “When we were doing [Captain America: Civil War] for instance, or even [Avengers: Infinity War], there were just dozens of characters that we had to take out of those comic stories because we didn't have access to them.”
This frustration has ended since Disney bought out 20th Century Fox and came to an agreement with Sony Pictures over the inclusion of Spider-Man in the MCU.
This brings all kinds of characters back to the table for Marvel as we’re seeing with the upcoming Deadpool and Wolverine.

Now we finally have an MCU film with Wolverine front and centre the X-Men, even in multiversal nonsense, are back.
Kevin Feige went on to say, “Now as we choose upcoming storylines, we don't have to do that, and we have access to all of them.”
This comment comes after growing speculation about the future of Avengers 5 and 6. The fifth film was due to star Kang as the central villain, however, those plans have since been scrapped.
Rumours are now beginning to swirl that the film will introduce the X-Men properly and have them face off against The Avengers in an adaptation of the famous comic book storyline.
