The X-Men are returning for Avengers: Doomsday, though we could be seeing a reimagining of one of their most popular comic stories.
The Fox X-Men universe is pretty much dead but it’s managed to live on through the MCU, with characters from those films returning as cameos and main characters in films like Deadpool And Wolverine for example.
That joke in Deadpool And Wolverine about Hugh Jackman playing the character until he’s 90 is starting to sound more and more accurate
When Avengers: Doomsday drops we’ll be welcoming back even more X-Men characters, like James Marsden’s Cyclops and Ian McKellan’s Magneto, though a new prequel comic could be giving us a taste of what’s to come when these characters return to the big screen.

Marvel recently announced Chris Claremont: Prelude to Future Past #1, a prequel to X-Men: Days Of Future Past which showed a dystopian future where mutants are facing extinction.
The prelude will explore even more mutants and how they’re surviving the Sentinels of the far future, worth a read if you’re a fan of that original story.
Now what’s this got to do with Avengers: Doomsday? Well teases on the plot from Kevin Feige himself have said the film will be focused on heroes from The Avengers, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts and X-Men all fighting Doctor Doom.
Given how powerful Doom can be and how a sequel is already planned, Avengers: Secret Wars, there’s a good chance not everyone is going to make it out of the film alive.

A popular theory at the moment is the Fox X-Men are returning, but will essentially be fodder for Doom to flex how strong he is, maybe even destroying the Fox universe for good to raise the stakes for the current MCU one.
Think X-Men: Days Of Future Past but instead of Sentinels killing off your favourite mutants it’s Doctor Doom, and he's arguably less merciful.
