We’ve known it was coming for some time now, but last night we finally received official confirmation: Discord is about to go to crap.
Discord has been slowly getting worse for years now. Annoying pop-ups, a worse UI, and odd paid features that absolutely nobody asked for now litter its every crevice.
An official statement on the Discord website last night was the final nail in the coffin though, because the messaging app is going public… and worse still, Humam Sakhnini, Blizzard Activision's Former CFO, is now the company’s new CEO.

“Hi everyone — I have some big news to share, so I’ll cut right to the chase: We have hired a new CEO to lead Discord through our next chapter of growth and someday becoming a public company,” Discord’s former CEO and founder Jason Citron revealed.
“I am thrilled to share that Humam Sakhnini will take on this role, and I will continue as a member of our Board of Directors and Advisor to the CEO.”
So, what does this mean in layman’s terms?
As Discord is now a public company, it no longer has the interests of its users at heart. When the board of investors tells them to bark, they’ll bark. I wouldn’t be surprised if the platform becomes wholly subscription-based very soon.

So, what do the folks online think about all this? Unsurprisingly, everyone on the r/Games thread discussing the news isn’t thrilled.
“Taking it public. Right now? That may be the dumbest decision ever,” replied user Old-Tomorrow-2798.
“This industry always turns over the top product every few years. This just tells me that time is close.”
“The writing has been on the wall for a while, especially apparent during their "April Fools" thing where they just happen to have a fully featured Ad overlay for their "silly thing",” replied user platonicgryphon.

“When Discord eventually dies I'll miss the few servers that I have with friends. But I won't miss any big ones, as the push to make everything discord servers has been a net loss for the internet, just go back to forums (I say commenting on reddit which I also dislike for the same reasons).”
Man, just after we got PlayStation and Xbox integration support, too. Oh well, does anyone know any other cool messaging apps? Is MSN still a thing?
