Gears Of War hitting PS5 without multiplayer, apparently

Well, now I'm immediately less excited for this

According to two different sources, the recently leaked Gears of War Collection won’t feature multiplayer on any system - including the PlayStation 5.

Alright, let’s backtrack a little. Firstly, the Gears of War Collection is set to release on Xbox Series X/S, PC and PlayStation 5 later this year, according to a recent report from well-known leaker ExTas1s (thank you to Gamespot for the source).

Now, details on the leak are a little hazy at the moment. We don’t know how many Gears of War games the collection will feature, we don’t know any exact release date (although some have pointed to a mid-August release) and we also don’t know if a Nintendo Switch 2 port is currently on the table.

However, two separate leakers have corroborated on one detail at least - the collection reportedly won’t feature multiplayer.

As detailed by Push Square's Sammy Barker, this bit of info was initially posted by leaker Detective Seeds, and then later corroborated by Windows Central's Jez Corden.

“Gears of War collection should be releasing early to mid August,” Detective Seeds revealed in a post on Twitter, “It is PS5 pro enhanced, but I have been told NO Multiplayer PVP, campaign focus only.”

When asked if this meant that the Gears of War Collection would also feature online co-op, Detective Seeds replied: “I asked that and was told “not sure yet.” The store page for it that is on the back end of PS shows 1 player and does not show “support for additional players.” So it appears it is campaign focused and no MP pvp.”

Now, this is kind of unsurprising. A lot of remasters/remakes do tend to omit multiplayer modes entirely.

However, I gotta say… it would be incredibly disappointing regardless.

My fondest memories of playing through the Gears of War games are blasting through the co-op campaign with my mates, so the omission of any online functionality does put a huge downer on this one for me.

Hopefully we’ll hear more in the coming weeks, following an official reveal.
