Even before Daniel Craig’s swan song No Time To Die released, James Bond fans were clamouring to know which actor would take over the role of cinema’s most iconic spy. Plenty of names have been tossed in the hat but perhaps none more so than Idris Elba’s. Previously, Bond producer Barbara Broccoli confirmed that Elba had been “part of the conversation,” but Elba himself has now given his thoughts - and they’re not what you’d expect.
In need of something new to watch? Star Wars: Andor lands on Disney Plus on 21 September.
As reported by Collider, Elba recently appeared on The Shop podcast and touched on the possibility of portraying Bond. Seeing as fans had essentially already cast him in their minds, you may be surprised to find out that 007 isn’t actually a role that the esteemed actor wants to take on.

The actor said, “It is not a goal for my career. I don’t think that, you know, playing Bond will satisfy some of my personal goals.” He continued, “It will definitely satisfy the will of a nation. I’m not gonna lie, every corner of the world I go, and I’m talking about different cultures, they always go ‘Bond,’ and I feel it is beyond me at this junction. It’s beyond me. You know, it’s not a question of, should I, do I, will I. It is what the will of the nation dictates sometimes.”
Hm. Well this does throw a spanner in the works. Back when Craig was cast though, he wasn’t the obvious choice yet you cannot deny that the actor has handled the role brilliantly, so whoever is chosen, we have high hopes.
