It is understandable that developers are feeling uncertain about releasing games this year, with Grand Theft Auto VI also expected to drop in just a matter of months.
With Grand Theft Auto VI expected to be the biggest game release in the past decade and will most likely reach record numbers when it comes to sales, it is understandable that developers do not want to compete.
As a result, shadow-dropping is a lot more common in recent months.

Check out the official trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI below!
Just yesterday, we saw Bethesda drop the release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (albeit after a lot of speculation and rumours) and mere moments ago saw Sucker Punch Productions randomly announce the release date for Ghost of Yōtei.
However, this has got GTA VI fans thinking: what if Rockstar did the same thing?

Let us face it, there wasn’t much build-up to the release of the first official trailer and many expect the second trailer to follow suit any day now.
Would it be too far-fetched for Rockstar to release Grand Theft Auto VI without warning?
Well, the discussion kicked off over on r/GTA6 just yesterday with one user posting a meme image of one character being sad that it has been “500 days after GTA 6 trailer one and still radio silence” compared to a happy bloke who is celebrating the launch of Oblivion.
“Imagine if GTA 6 shadow dropped…” they wrote.

However, user Isiderdon thinks that this is pretty unlikely.
“Nah, no way they’d shadow drop the most anticipated game of all time,” their comment read.
“Instead imagine how much money they will make in the 3-6 month promo phase before the game drops by selling merchandise, posters, autograph sessions and 2-3 more trailers with 100 million+ views.”
User CouchPoturtle agreed, adding, “I highly doubt they’d ever shadow drop it but I can definitely see an extremely short promotional window before release.

I’m talking trailers and info videos dropping in July/August and the game coming out in October/November.
There’s really no need to do more than 3 months of promo for this. As soon as so much as a screenshot drops, the internet will break.”
I can’t help but agree but it would still be interesting to see the internet explode if Rockstar ever made this decision.
