A popular developer has joked about the highly anticipated release of GTA VI during a 2025 Game of the Year discussion.
At this point, the hype for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is so intense that many fans of the Rockstar Games series might expect Game of the Year awards across the board. God forbid if GTA VI would earn a nine out of 10 or worse still, an eight!

When Rockstar Games revealed the first trailer for GTA VI, we later learned that the game is intended to be released late this year, though no solid release date has been announced.

That being said, as we all know, it’s very common for video games to be delayed for reasons such as extra polish and whatnot. In particular, Rockstar Games titles are synonymous with delays but the proof is in the pudding with just about every game from the developer knocking it out of the park.
So it would be wise to assume that GTA VI could be released in 2026 but the beloved founder of Hazelight Studios, Josef Fares, the team that gave us A Way Out, It Takes Two and more recently, Split Fiction, may have an inkling that the Rockstar Games title could still launch this year.
During an interview with the YouTube channel MinnMax, Josef Fares was asked if Split Fiction is winning at The Game Awards for 2025 to which he replied, “Not if GTA VI comes out,” with a smile.
As charismatic as Fares is, I believe he’s being very humble here but if GTA VI does release this year, it would be very difficult for any game to compete against that Goliath.

That being said, granted it never launched in the same year as a GTA or Red Dead Redemption but in 2021, It Takes Two won Game of the Year at The Game Awards beating other great titles such as Resident Evil Village, Deathloop, Returnal and more.
Grand Theft Auto VI is set to be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It’s PC release is yet to be announced.
As for Split Fiction, that’s out now on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
