The original God of War games on the PlayStation 2 set a new bar for cinematic storytelling in video games, and years later Santa Monica Studio went back to the drawing board to reinvent the series for a new generation in God of War on the PS4. The tales of vengeance were replaced with a story of fatherhood, redemption and atonement, but the commitment to visceral combat remained very much intact.
Right now, you can snap up Kratos’s first adventure in the Nine Realms for just £7.99, down from £12.99 at Amazon. For that incredible price you’ll land dozens of hours of gameplay and a staggeringly effective story to boot. It might be a PS4 game, but it will also run on a PS5 and it’ll look fantastic while doing so.

Having retired from slaughtering the entirety of the Greek pantheon, we find Kratos living a peaceful life in the Norse realm of Midgard. Soon after cremating his wife, Kratos and his young son Atreus set off on an adventure to scatter her ashes atop Midgard’s tallest peak, facing challenges from the Norse gods along the way.
The gameplay isn’t the same button-mashing symphony of violence that players will remember from the original games. Instead, from an over-the-shoulder perspective, players take a more methodical, heavy-swinging approach to carving a path through enemies. Between the fights, it’s a game of exploration, puzzle-solving, and enjoying the gradual development of Kratos’s bond with Atreus, his plucky and sweet-natured son who has no idea he’s half-god.
An absolute modern classic, this edition of God of War has 4.7 out of 5 stars averaged from 4,667 Amazon ratings, with players praising the gorgeous graphics, gripping storyline and reinvented gameplay. “It’s visually stunning, has very addictive gameplay and fighting systems, and it has an interesting story,” said one five-star review.
“Amazing game. From the graphics to the size of the universe you are playing in, this game is a masterpiece,” said another review awarding top marks.

A third added: “This game will stay close to my heart. Great graphics, great settings and great storyline. Everything was top notch.”
Some have been disappointed with the enemy variety over the course of the campaign, however. “On the flipside, after some hours the game becomes very repetitive,” said one review. “The enemies are the same, the fights are the same... Even the bosses are reskins of previous bosses.”
On occasion, it failed to sink its hooks into some players: “Bought this as I’d heard so many good things about it, but I just couldn't get into it at all. I know, I know, I'm wrong, but it just didn't pull me in and as a result I moved on.”
If story-driven games with expansive, stylised worlds are up your street, £28.99 for the revitalised Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition is an absolute bargain at Currys. For more challenging, visceral combat in a world chock-full of secrets, Elden Ring is perhaps the best in its class at £49.99.
