The world is anxiously awaiting the release of GTA 6. First teased by Rockstar Games back in February 2022, the next instalment of the Grand Theft Auto series is easily the most hyped video game we have on the horizon right now. But a rather large question still remains - will GTA 6 have an online mode, and if so, will it feature cross-platform support? Here’s everything we know so far.
Rockstar Games is yet to release much official information about GTA 6 - we don’t currently know when it’ll release, or even when the first trailer will be revealed. With that said, speculation and rumours are rampant - some believe that GTA 6 could be officially unveiled in September 2023 to tie in with GTA 5’s 10-year anniversary. It remains to be seen if this will actually happen or not.
Take a look at what GTA 6 might look like when it releases with this GTA 5 Vice City mod.
Even though Rockstar Games hasn’t directly confirmed it, it seems more than likely that fans can also get ready for GTA Online 2 to launch at some point to tie in with GTA 6, much like how GTA Online released a couple of weeks after GTA 5. In fact, following the huge GTA 6 leak that surfaced online in September 2022 (which Rockstar Games confirmed was legitimate, and had been accessed in a network intrusion), fans found what appears to be footage of a work-in-progress online mode.

The leaks didn’t reveal loads about GTA 6’s online mode, although one gameplay clip did seem to imply that, at least at one point in its development, GTA Online 2 had a maximum lobby size of 32, which is marginally larger than GTA Online’s existing 30-player lobby size.
Assuming it does exist then, will GTA Online 2 feature cross-platform play? Sadly, it doesn’t seem likely. Despite the fact that the current GTA Online is playable on PC and consoles, gamers can currently only play together if they’re on the same platform. That means that fans on Xbox can’t play with those on PlayStation, and vice versa (obviously). As such, GTA Online 2 might follow suit, and the situation could be the same whenever (if ever) it releases.
With that said, Rockstar Games knows how hyped everyone is about GTA 6, and in turn, the potential of GTA Online 2. You’d think that the devs would want to take the series to greater heights with each release, so perhaps they’ll push the boat out and give gamers on all platforms the option to play GTA Online 2 together? Right now, we can only speculate.
