Darth Vader is not only the most popular villain in the Star Wars universe, but he’s also one of the most iconic villains of all time with a legacy that will no doubt live forever.
The legendary voice of Darth Vader, James Earl Jones passed away in September 2024 at the age of 93. Mark Hamill who played Luke Skywalker described Earl Jones as a father figure and as I type this, I can hear Vader’s muffled voice saying “No, I am your father.”

James Earl Jones could never be truly replaced but the Star Wars universe will continue to live on and Darth Vader will no doubt return. Sure, Disney and Lucasfilm could hire an actor who sounds like James Earl Jones, but would that be the best decision?

“Today I learned in 2022, James Earl Jones officially retired from voicing Darth Vader, but signed permission for Lucasfilm to use archive recordings and AI to continue using his voice for the character,” said Redditor Lord-LemonHead, kicking off the discussion on the thread.
While it may feel questionable to use AI to replicate the voice of someone who passed away, let’s not forget that James Earl Jones would have been 91 when he agreed to this and at that age, respectfully, he would have known that he doesn't have much time left.

As Reddit user bolanrox pointed out when replying to the post, AI was used to replicate James Earl Jones’ voice in the Disney Plus series, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
“Honestly, it sounds very good. Watch the Vader scene in Rogue One and compare it to how he sounds in Obi-Wan. The AI cloning tech gets frighteningly close to sounding like classic Vader,” replied drmirage809.
“I mean it certainly sounds like him, but there was just an unshakable feeling that I was not listening to an actual performance,” explained Lunter97. “I think this particular franchise has an obsession with using this tech as an alternative to recasts, and I get it but a lot of the best performances came from recasts.”
No doubt, AI can be a wonderful thing, as long as it’s not used illegally or at the expense of costing talented people work. That being said, AI isn't going anywhere, so whatever we may think of it, we better get used to it.
