One of Stranger Things’ biggest stars is joining the MCU next year in the next live-action Spider-Man film. The only question is, which character are they supposed to be playing?
As revealed by Deadline's Justin Kroll last night, Sadie Sink (best known for her roles as Max Mayfield in Netflix's Stranger Things and Darren Aronofsky's 2022 drama The Whale) is set to join the cast of Spider-Man 4 alongside Tom Holland.
Sink is a big enough star, even where Disney’s MCU is concerned, that you wouldn’t just hire her for some small-bit part, so news of her casting has got people theorising about which famous Marvel character she’s been chosen for.

Considering Sink is a redhead, a lot of people naturally jumped to the conclusion that she’ll be playing Mary-Jane Watson. Of course, the MCU already has an MJ, played by Zendaya, so that’s highly unlikely (unless there are some multiverse shenanigans at play here).
The current theory is that she’ll be playing Jean Grey, although exactly why Disney would choose to introduce one of the most well-known X-Men in a Spider-Man film is beyond me.
Over on DiscussingFilm’s Twitter post discussing the news, fans are excited to see Sink join the MCU… although most are confused at the way in which Disney are going about it.
“Sadie Sink as Jean Grey would be [fire],” commented user @pjweb3, “but I could also see her as MJ. Either way, she’d kill it!”

“There is no way they’re gonna introduce Jean Grey in Spider-Man 4 of all things surely,” replied user @hzjoe03.
“And MJ? Zendaya is right there.”
Of course, there are a bunch of other Spidey characters that Sink could have possibly been chosen to play instead, such as for instance Gwen Stacy or Black Cat, but I’d personally like to see her take on the role of one of Spider-Man’s lesser-known allies.
Angelica Jones, better known as Firestar, was introduced in the 1981 animated series Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, and I think Sink would be an incredible pick to play her.

Although Firestar isn’t exactly an A-list comic book character, she is one of Spidey’s closest allies… and I think Peter could do with a few of those, given what happened at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Either way, expect to hear the official confirmation sometime in the coming months.
