Back in May, 36 years (!) after its predecessor’s release, Top Gun: Maverick hit cinemas, and quite easily became one of the best movies to grace our screens this year, as a huge hit with fans and critics alike.
GAMINGbible’s James was full of praise for the film, as he so eloquently expressed in his review: “I can safely say Top Gun: Maverick is close to perfect”, he wrote. “It’s serious yet silly. It’s visually impressive beyond belief. Most of all, it’s a sequel that honours the past while making the most of what films are capable of in the modern day. A must-see movie for fans, and an epic blockbuster for all.”
Check out our interview with Top Gun: Maverick producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Joseph Kosinski below.
With that in mind, it’s not at all surprising that the movie has been a hit at the box office, but it’s just reached a phenomenal milestone. As reported by Collider, Top Gun: Maverick just became Paramount Pictures’ top domestic grossing film of all time, surpassing the titan that is Titanic (1997). For comparison, Tom Cruise’s latest outing has brought in $601.9 million, as opposed to the 1997 release’s $600.7 million.

“For 110 years, Paramount Pictures has produced and distributed some of the most iconic films in Hollywood history, including the all-time classic Titanic, which marks its 25th anniversary this year,” said Brian Robbins, Paramount Pictures’ president and CEO. “Top Gun: Maverick is a phenomenal motion picture, and we take deep pride in celebrating this tremendous achievement alongside Tom Cruise, our filmmakers and cast, our marketing and distribution teams, and, of course, all the new and original Top Gun fans, without whom this wouldn’t have been possible.”
Despite the film’s success, though, back in May, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that there’s nothing immediately planned as far as another movie goes: “Let’s ride this wave,” he said at the time.
But, who knows, maybe in another 36 years, we’ll eventually get a third instalment? We can dream - for us to even get this sequel after so long, clearly nothing is impossible.
