September might just be the most exciting month in every gamer’s calendar this year. At long last, Bethesda’s space-exploration RPG Starfield is almost upon us, and there’s plenty to be hyped for.
We’ve known for some time now that there’ll be over 1000 different planets to explore, which makes describing Starfield as an open-world game feel like a huge understatement. Admittedly, only 10% of these will have life on them, but that doesn’t mean that the rest won’t be worth looking around. Not only that, but it’s been confirmed that at least some NPCs will be able to say your player name out loud, which I can only imagine will be used for absolute chaos.
Take a look at the story trailer for Starfield right here.
Really, if anything, it seems that the only thing that Starfield fans have taken exception to so far is the game’s performance. Not only will it be capped at 30fps on both Xbox Series X and S, but the fact that Bethesda has partnered with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) for its release makes it seem unlikely that the game will support DLSS 3 on PC.

If you’re not familiar with the term, DLSS (which stands for ‘deep learning super sampling’) is a rendering technology which uses AI to revolutionise graphics. Lower-resolution inputs (which can generally produce smoother, faster frame rates) are upscaled using AI, to essentially produce a higher resolution, high frame rate output. In simpler terms, it makes games look very shiny and very smooth. DLSS 3 is the most up-to-date version of this technology.
Bethesda hasn’t confirmed if the PC version of Starfield will support DLSS 3, but as Wccftech reports, prominent modder PureDark has now announced that they’re going to mod in DLSS support themselves. They’re confident that they’ll have DLSS 3 running within the game’s early-access period, and after that, they’ll “slowly” add support for DLSS 2.
Todd Howard already confirmed that Starfield will be a “modder’s paradise”, although admittedly, adding full DLSS 3 support might not be what he had in mind when he said that.
