More often than not, an expansion won't quite live up to the standards of the base game, though some may come close. However, the fantastic Undead Nightmare for the original Red Dead Redemption was one expansion that came closer than most.
The original Red Dead Redemption was released in 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and was met with high critical acclaim from fans and reviewers alike. On the aggregate website Metacritic, Red Dead Redemption earned a score of 95 and was rewarded with the ‘Must-Play’ accolade and garnered a tasty score of 9.0 from users. As for Undead Nightmare, that earned a very respectable score of 87, which is mighty impressive for an expansion.

When the (pre) sequel arrived in 2018 with Red Dead Redemption 2, it exceeded the expectations of its predecessor in almost every way. It had an even more compelling story, an immersive world filled with so much content and life, that even new games are struggling to match the standard today resulting in Red Dead Redemption 2 being another candidate as one of the best video games of all time from developer Rockstar Games.

So, considering the success of both Red Dead Redemption games as well as its 2010 expansion, Undead Nightmare, it would make sense that Rockstar Games would capitalise and release Undead Nightmare 2, right? Unfortunately, nearly six years after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, fans are still waiting for the apocalyptic zombie expansion that will likely never arrive.
Fans on Reddit have been discussing the Undead Nightmare 2 expansion that never came to be, and one user, in particular, has dreamt up a concept that just breaks our hearts. “I was so desperate for more from this game, and these characters, and this world that my brain wrote the DLC [Undead Nightmare 2]. I need to get this out of my head and into the world,” said danielgmal.
The Reddit user in question spoke of how Undead Nightmare 2 would offer one final test for our beloved protagonist, Arthur Morgan with a new morality system that would determine the fate of his soul. It would also bring new locations, characters, enemies and much more. If Rockstar Games were to ever release Undead Nightmare 2 (and they won't), they should take notes from danielgmal.

“Sounds really cool. Damn RDR2 had so much DLC potential but Rockstar Games likes to leave money on the table,” exclaimed Light_Guardian07. “Not one of the worst takes I’ve seen on here, can’t lie. It’s an interesting spin on the original DLC, and somehow feels more fitting alongside the main game story,” replied Danvandop42. “It would be fun to tag along with the Dutch van der Linde gang as a zombie apocalypse goes on. I’d wish we had it,” suggested Theforgottensoilder.
It is a damn shame that Rockstar Games decided not to release Undead Nightmare 2, because I’m sure it would have been another critical and commercial success. But it is what it is.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is out now on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. What’s more, it’s also backwards compatible with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
