In recent years, we’ve been blessed with some truly great video games, perhaps even too many to mention. However, a game that will likely be somewhere at the top of a lot of lists would be Red Dead Redemption 2.
Released in 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, then the following year on PC, Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 is truly one of the greatest games of all time. This notion is backed up by the fact that Red Dead Redemption 2 earned the “Must-Play” accolade on Metacritic with an almighty score of 97.

Despite being a sequel by number, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a prequel to the critically acclaimed game of 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The original Red Dead Redemption told the story of John Marston, a former member of the Dutch van der Linde gang now trying to live a more honest life with his family. Yet, with this being a Rockstar Games title, living an honest life for its characters is never going to last long, as much as we adore Mr Marston.

Whereas in Red Dead Redemption 2, we're told the story of the latter days of the Dutch van der Linde gang and at the heart of its tale is Arthur Morgan, a leading member of the group and second in command to Dutch. Other than offering a bigger, more dense world than its predecessor, Red Dead Redemption 2 has more dynamic choices and depending on the decisions that you make, it will in some ways impact your story and how NPCs react to you.
Whether you choose to be a nice Arthur or a mean Arthur, is up to you. For me, my Arthur was a good guy who at times had to do bad things. I loved the story of my Arthur so much that I don't think I’ll ever start up a new game so that I can preserve my memory of his story in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Fans on Reddit have been sharing their love for Arthur Morgan and have labelled him as one of gaming's greatest protagonists (or antagonist, depending on the choices that you make). “Where do you rank Arthur Morgan among gaming protagonists? For me he's within the top five,” declared wanderingbrother.
“I haven’t played a ton of games in this genre but it’s the best I’ve ever played. I can insert myself in an epic Western and be totally immersed,” replied charliemike, explaining the impact that Arthur and Red Dead Redemption 2 had on them. “The only thing that makes me sad about the experience is that I may never play something like it again.”

“My top five are: Arthur Morgan (RDR2), BJ Blazkowicz (Wolfenstein), Booker DeWitt (BioShock Infinite), Michael DeSanta (GTA V) and Joel Miller (The Last of Us),” replied Certain_End4402. “Arthur Morgan is number one for me, I just wish that I got more out of him,” said Ok_Anything7508. “Arthur, Geralt (The Witcher), and Nathan Drake (Uncharted) are my top three,” exclaimed SolarNovaPhoenix.
Other notable mentions include Kiryu Kazuma (Yakuza/Like a Dragon), Ezio Auditore (Assassin’s Creed), Kratos (God of War), Master Chief (Halo), and Commander Shephard (Mass Effect).
Red Dead Redemption 2 is out now and it’s backwards compatible with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
