Red Dead Redemption 2 is by no means a horror game but there is one location in particular that players stumble across that has stayed with them to this day thanks to the horrors that lurk within.
Upon first glance, Red Dead Redemption 2 is not a horror game and players will not have to deal with any monstrous creatures or jump scares lurking around every corner.

However, there is one group of NPCs in the Rockstar title that would feel at home in any other horror game, especially as their true identity remains a mystery.

It is the Night Folk, a group of Voodoo-esque killers who live in and around the swamps of Bayou Nwa and Bluewater Marsh in Red Dead Redemption 2.
They are known to attack visitors by setting up traps and coming out at night to rob, loot, and pillage whatever they can before murdering their victims in incredibly gruesome ways.
As a result, the swamps of RDR2 are extremely dangerous to visit at night and not just because of the alligators in the area.
But who are the Night Folk?

It is never explicitly explained who the Night Folk are but that has allowed fans to make up their own decisions about who these gruesome killers could actually be.
The discussion kicked off over on r/RDR2 when one user asked, “What’s the backstory behind Night Folk? What exactly are they and why do they do what they do?”
It wasn’t long before fans came forward with their own headcanons for the antagonistic faction and it was the top comment that seemed to make the most sense.
“I feel like the Night Folk are left purposefully ambiguous to make them scarier”, user Wolf-Track shared.

“The only context we really get for them is from the bayou-man that asks Arthur to help clear his cabin of the Night Folk.
Personally, I've always wanted to find out where they go during the day, or maybe find some remains of them actually inhabiting somewhere.”
This in turn led to another user sharing a fascinating take on their identity.
“I heard this one theory that they're actually the people from St. Denis, and they just go to the Swamp at night,” Vermilion12_ added.

“That's why they cover their faces and never speak, so they don't reveal who they are.”
However, I do agree that their ambiguity makes them all the more creepy so perhaps the mystery should remain unsolved.
