The battle between Microsoft and Sony continues. Well, us video game fans have grown and matured. The concept of the so-called ‘console war’ is non-existent in our minds. The big boys can’t stop arguing between themselves though.
As I’m sure you’re aware, Microsoft is in the midst of trying to acquire Activision for a whopping $69 billion. The issue is, PlayStation aren’t thrilled about the prospect of Call of Duty becoming an Xbox-exclusive. Originally, Microsoft said this wouldn’t happen but then admitted not for “several years” anyway. It’s an aspect of the deal that’s caused pushback from several regulators, resulting in Microsoft offering Sony a 10-year access deal in a bid to try and push the acquisition through. PlayStation fans are arguing though that they don’t need Call of Duty. Sony could just put its money into developing Resistance instead.
Take a look at Modern Warfare II’s third-person mode below.
As reported by GGRecon, fans have suggested that PlayStation’s Resistance has the potential to rival Call of Duty. To date, there have been three main games in the franchise - all of which were well-received critically. Resistance: Fall of Man debuted in 2006, followed by Resistance 2 in 2008 and Resistance 3 in 2011. The first and third-person shooter takes place in an alternate 1950s where an alien race called the Chimera have invaded earth, capturing humans and turning them into monstrous super soldiers.

Over on ResetEra, PlayStation users were polled on what exclusive franchise had the potential to rival Call of Duty. Resistance won 41.3% of the vote. Killzone came in second place with 33.1% while SOCOM came in third with 25.6% of votes. PlayStation’s roster of first-party exclusives is enviable but there’s definitely room for a major shooter.
It’ll be interesting to see how Naughty Dog’s multiplayer The Last of Us project turns out, seeing as Factions - an in-game multiplayer component of the original game - continues to attract a playerbase. The project will get a full reveal later this year.
