Oh Halo. How I’d love to see you return to the golden days once more. It’s no secret that the franchise has been in, well, let’s say troubled waters for quite some time.

Halo Infinite is by no means a bad game, but it didn’t exactly live up to fan expectation upon release. It relied heavily on post-launch support and even then, certain promised additions - like split screen co-op - were cancelled after months of development. Admittedly, I do think Halo Infinite is now the strongest it's ever been, but it’s not enough for some fans to stop nostalgia diving in their minds. Even Paramount’s Halo TV series is causing a ruckus. While season two is shaping up to be much more promising, discussions surrounding Chief’s recurrent removal of his helmet continue to swirl online.

Maybe it’s time to leave the past behind us as we could be on the cusp of Halo’s resurgence and bright future. 343 Industries is seemingly quietly killing off Halo Infinite.

Take a look at the trailer for season two of Halo below.

As spotted by GamesRadar, the announcement was made during a recent 343 Industries community livestream. There, developers confirmed that Halo Infinite’s current season would be its last, with the team then shifting to dropping smaller “content updates”. It’s a somewhat similar move to what Rockstar Games has done with Red Dead Online. In that game, players benefit from new cosmetics and XP boosts but little else.

We know that Halo Infinite will retain a battle pass system, but these will run from four to six weeks, with 20-tiers per pass. Not much else was given away regarding the game’s future but devs did promise fans that a dedicated team will continue “to deliver going forward”, so it’s not being abandoned completely.

That being said, the studio also stated, “We also have additional teams now, accelerating towards the future, working on brand new projects.” Finally a new Halo entry perhaps? It’s a shame to see the cogs slow on Halo Infinite when it’s just now reaching its full potential but we’re approaching three years on from launch. Maybe it is time to look to pastures new.
