One of Xbox’s exclusive fighting games is going free-to-play on Steam.
If you’re in the mood for a PC fighting game but don’t want to splurge on Mortal Kombat 1 or Street Fighter 6, we’ve got the next best thing, Killer Instinct.
Take a look at Killer Instinct below.
The 2D fighter launched on the Xbox One and PC years ago but unfortunately didn’t get a chance to shine given the disappointing reception to Microsoft’s latest console at the time.

Despite this, the free-to-play title grew fairly popular, with its roster bolstered by new fighters, some of which came from other game franchises like The Arbiter from Halo, or Rash from Battletoads.
Fast forward a few years later and the fighting game found another home on PC, where it was less popular, but still had enough players to justify its release and continued updates.
Now, a decade after its initial launch, the title is making another big change, as it’ll soon become free-to-play through the Steam store. This is part of the 10-year anniversary celebrations for the title, which will be marked by the Killer Instinct: Anniversary Edition. Any players who bought Killer Instinct prior to the update will receive the new Anniversary Edition as a free download.
This includes all characters, a double XP booster for online play, and accessories for the fighters.

For those who want to play the game for free, you’ll be able to do so but only with access to one fighter. Who that fighter will be will be dependent on a rotation system, which will swap the available fighters around from week to week.
It’s currently unknown when the free-to-play version of Killer Instinct will launch on PC as a release date hasn’t been shared as of yet. It’s likely it’ll coincide with the release of Killer Instinct: Anniversary Edition as an alternative to paying for the more pricey version of the game.
