Farming sims, whether cosy or not, are big business. Everyone loves growing crops, doing a spot of fishing, and taking in the scenery as the world passes by. However, standard farming experiences seem to be ten a penny nowadays, so how can developers make it different? Mechs, apparently.
We recently visited a farming sim that featured mechs with Lightyear Frontier, but now there’s another on the horizon and you can play it for free on Steam, right now. First Dwarf: First Island is more of an action-adventure RPG than just a straight-up farming sim, but with plenty of base building and material harvesting, it will certainly scratch that particular itch.
Were we to imagine Stardew Valley but with mechs, it would be a must-play
Things definitely aren’t as cosy as some would like in this world of floating islands as, from the screenshots we’ve seen, your mech will be clobbering all kinds of enemies. First Dwarf: First Island looks like it’s mashing together several inspirations and games as it contains “base building, colony survival, tower defense, colony building, action, and strategy.” Which is quite the shopping list. We imagine a bit of Stardew Valley, with a touch of Valheim in here.

Despite the stuffing in of so many genre features, the game looks pretty darn epic. The fights appear combo-based for a bit of hacking and slashing, while the world looks stunning and well worth exploring. The base building in any game can be incredibly satisfying, but from what we see here, there are a lot of options for making your home base operate with and without you, using automated defences.
While there is no firm release date for First Dwarf: First Island, you can play the prologue for free and get a taste of what’s to come. We’re loving what we can see from the game’s trailer and it will hopefully bring a nice genre mash-up to keep us playing for many hours.
