In this current console generation, it feels like Sony has left handheld gaming behind with the likes of Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck leading the way.
Granted, Sony did release the PlayStation Portal last year to reasonable success but this handheld device is a streaming console for the PlayStation 5 rather than its standalone thing. However, according to a recent rumour, Sony may be working on a new handheld console that draws inspiration from the likes of the PSP and PS Vita.

As shared in a ResetEra thread, Russian journalist Anton Logvinov claims that Sony is working on a new handheld console that will be able to play PlayStation 4 games, in particular, PS4 games that are already available to play on the Steam Deck.

Interestingly, only PlayStation 4 games are mentioned about this rumoured handheld console from Sony and not PlayStation 5. While this may be disappointing to hear, I would imagine a handheld console that runs PS5 games natively would cost a lot of money to produce and in turn, would demand a high RRP.
The potential production costs of a Sony handheld console that plays PS5 games natively is probably why the PlayStation Portal is a streaming device. That being said, these are mere rumours at this time and they should be taken with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise.
It’s also perhaps worth keeping in mind that the PlayStation Portal has an RRP of £199.99/$199.99 and it will be interesting to see if the new rumoured handheld console is more expensive than its streaming counterpart.
Sony is expected to have its next showcase event around Summer Game Fest next month, so if there’s any truth behind these recent rumours, hopefully, the tech giant will officially tease something soon. We’ll of course keep you posted should we hear of any further developments.
