The upcoming redesigned PlayStation 5 is raising some serious concerns around preservation, seeing as the console needs an internet connection in order to connect the detachable disc drive to the base console.
PlayStation revealed their latest console earlier this month. In addition to the new Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive, the overhauled console also features 1TB SSD to boost internal storage, plus weight has been reduced by 18% and 24% when compared to previous models while volume has been reduced by 30%. Unlike the current PS5 which features a matte finish, the new design features half glossy, half matte panels. Unfortunately, you will need to pay extra if you want to store your console vertically, as the new console only includes a horizontal stand with vertical ones sold separately.
Take a look at the console in action below.
We also know that the original PlayStation 5 will stop being sold as soon as stocks run out. Already though, some have raised concerns about the new design, particularly in regards to console preservation. As spotted by CharlieIntel, a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III PS5 bundle has been spotted in a store, with the box reading, “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon set up.”

You might be thinking … Why is this an issue? Well, the server that allows you to connect your digital PS5 and detachable disc drive may not always be supported. It will undoubtedly be supported for many years to come, but eventually we’ll move on to the PS6, PS7 and maybe even the PS8. When the PS5 becomes a ‘retro’ console, who’s to say that Sony will still be supporting the server required to complete this part of the set up?
As pointed out by VGC, the server will likely verify the connection to ensure that the correct component is being paired. As we enter this increasingly digital age though, it does raise further questions around console preservation and how developers can ensure preservation remains viable.
