If you cast your mind back to April, you might recall that the delightful Tails of Iron was included in the month’s PlayStation Plus essential tier line-up. If you downloaded and enjoyed that game, you can now enjoy a little bonus as developer Odd Bug Studio has just dropped a brand new free expansion.
Titled Bright Fir Forest, the free expansion adds plenty of new content. To be precise, it adds 13 new quests, a whopping 96 new weapons and armour pieces, plus three new challengers at the Mole Arena. If you ask me, that is a very generous festive treat. Oh, did I fail to mention the 14 new bosses? Bright Fir Forest is going to keep you busy for quite some time. It is totally free for all of those that own Tails of Iron. As mentioned, it was available as an essential tier game back in April, so let’s hope you added it to your game library. It’s always well worth saving those essential tier freebies.
Grab Sable this month on PlayStation Plus.
If you’re unfamiliar with Tails of Iron - maybe you downloaded it back in April but never got around to opening it up - let me fill you in on exactly what it’s all about. Players assume the role of King Redgi, a young rat who seeks to avenge his father who was murdered by invading frogs. It’s part action-RPG, part side-scrolling soulslike. Developers cited The Witcher, God of War, and Dark Souls franchises as inspirations so if you happen to be a fan of any of those, you’ll likely enjoy Tails of Iron.

Over on Metacritic, the game has a very respectable score of 84 on Xbox Series X/S, followed by 81 on PC and PlayStation 5 and 80 on Nintendo Switch. If you’re a massive fan and are happy to part with a few pennies, the paid for Crimson Knight DLC has also launched. This grants players three armour skins, three helmet skins, three weapon skins, and three shield skins.
Don’t forget to pick up this month’s essential tier PlayStation Plus freebies: Sable, PowerWash Simulator, and LEGO 2K Drive. You never know what fun DLCs will pop up down the line that’ll make you think, ‘Damn, I wish I’d got that at the time’. Powerwash Simulator has already teamed up with Tomb Raider and SpongeBob Squarepants.
