PlayStation drops special anniversary freebie, no PS Plus required

Steam users won't be missing out on some goodies either

One very special PlayStation franchise is turning 20 years old this weekend, and Sony is rolling out a bunch of freebies to celebrate.

It’s a bit of a sobering thought to swallow for me, but the original God of War, which released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2, will officially be 20 years of age on March 22.

A lot has changed for the franchise over the years, but (not counting PC ports) God of War has always remained a PlayStation-exclusive series.

Clearly, Sony knows what side their bread is buttered on, because they’re rolling out several free God of War free downloads to commemorate its anniversary.

First up, a free "anniversary-themed" PlayStation Network Avatar featuring the big man Kratos himself is already available to claim on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

There are also some new items on the Steam Points Shop for players over on PC, if you have some spare points to drop. Plus, both of the PC ports of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök are on sale at the moment on Steam, with the former being a whopping 60% off.

Most excitingly however, God of War Ragnarök is getting a free update on both PlayStation and PC that adds some God of War II-themed items to the game.

These include three new "Dark Odyssey" armour sets, for Kratos, Atreus and Freya, as well as three new weapon appearances and attachments for Kratos.

These are all themed after the unlockable skin in God of War II for beating it on God Mode, as well as the original working title for the first game.

No need to wait until March 22 to grab all of these though, as Sony states on the PlayStation that all of these are available from today. I wonder if that means they have something else planned for March 22?
