The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann has confirmed that while it’s yet to see the light of day, a full Tommy spin-off has outlined which he’s hopeful will be explored either via game or a show.
Last Friday saw the release of Grounded II: The Making of The Last of Us Part II and if you haven’t tuned in yet, I strongly urge you to. It’s a fantastic must-watch for fans of the game - and it just so happens to be free on YouTube and included in the ‘Making Of’ tab of The Last of Us Part II Remastered. In the documentary, we discovered that Part II was originally set to take gameplay inspiration from Bloodborne, while Druckmann also confirmed he had a concept for Part III. Both developers and actors spoke out about the divisive response to the game, but it’s a discussion about a possible spin-off that I want to draw your attention to.
Take a look at the trailer for Grounded II: The Making of The Last of Us Part II below.
Druckmann explained that while a full storyline outline for a Tommy-centric tale exists, Naughty Dog chose to focus on ironing out crunch from the studio following the release of Part II. “We have written a story that takes place after The Last of Us [Part] II that stars Tommy and I hope that one day, we get to make it, “he explained.

“It was always a small story. It was never like a full title. [...] I still believe one day it’ll see the light of day. I don’t know whether it’ll be a game or a show. TBD.” It definitely sounds like it has DLC potential. Likewise though, we know HBO’s TV adaptation of Part II is set to extend the game over several seasons which could see it bring in something like this to pad that out.
It’s interesting that this story is set following the conclusion of Part II. My first thought was that we’d explore Tommy’s ‘Hunter’ days but that’s clearly not the case. Could Jackson come under threat? Could an old foe from Tommy’s past emerge? Now that Neil’s let the cat out of the bag, I fear fans won’t rest until this story has been released in one format or another.
