God of War Ragnarök successor could be announced next month

Could a God of War Ragnarök successor be announced within the next few weeks?

Sony’s God of War series is one of its flagship IPs and for many, it’s the main reason why some picked up the latest PlayStation machine.

Developed by Santa Monica Studio, when the God of War soft reboot was released for PlayStation 4 in 2018, it welcomed a new legion of fans as well as those that would return to the latest adventures of Kratos, who now had a son to take care of called Atreus.

Check out the God of War Ragnarök trailer below!

In God of War (2018), Kratos just wanted to live a quiet life with his son in Scandinavia. However, unfortunately for Kratos, word gets out and it's not long before he has Gods quite literally come knocking on his door looking for trouble. Obviously, we all know not to mess with Kratos, but it seems the Norse Gods never received that memo and they’d soon be regretting their decision to pick a fight with our God of War.

Then in 2022, we got a fantastic sequel with God of War Ragnarök which, like its predecessor, was greeted with high critical acclaim from the video game community. Without giving too much away, God of War Ragnarök ended by leaving some questions unanswered and for that reason (other than being a great game of course), fans are desperate for a sequel.

Earlier this month, new rumours in relation to a God of War Ragnarök expansion suggested that an announcement could be made next month. However, new rumours are now making the rounds that Santa Monica Studio is hiring new staff for an upcoming project and some believe that this could be a God of War Ragnarök successor, whether it be a direct sequel, a spin-off or it could be a totally unrelated IP.

As reported by Game Rant, an indication as to why Santa Monica Studio could be working on a new God of War project is that the studio has rehired Ariel Lawrence, who had previously worked on several games in the series and quite recently was promoted to game director.

According to Ariel Lawrence’s LinkedIn profile, she has worked on the likes of God of War 2, God of War 3 and God of War Ascension before departing for Riot Games. Lawrence would return to Santa Monica Studio in July 2021 as a writer but was later shifted to game director in April 2022.

Obviously, it should be stated that all unconfirmed rumours should be taken with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise. That being said, I am a firm believer in there being no smoke without fire. Hopefully, either Sony or Santa Monica Studio will confirm the rumours in the coming months. We're mere weeks away from The Game Awards, a major platform for announcements.

As of right now, God of War Ragnarök is out for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
