A God of War TV show is being scrapped and plans to completely start over, according to a source close to Deadline.
As detailed by Deadline’s Senior TV Writer Lynette Rice, the show only seems to have been in its pre-production stages - although all of the scripts for the first season may be potentially thrown out and completely reworked.
Rafe Judkins, best known for his work on The Wheel of Time TV adaptation and the 2022 film adaptation of Uncharted, has apparently stepped down from his role as showrunner, alongside executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus.

Apparently both Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios plan to hire a completely fresh writing team to help rework the series, even though Deadline’s source did state that executives working alongside Judkins were impressed with the scripts they’d already submitted.
Kratos last appeared in the free Valhalla DLC.
The scrapped idea for the show would have closely followed the plot of Santa Monica Studio’s 2018 God of War reboot. It would have followed Kratos and his son as they make their way through Midgard, in an attempt to fulfil his dead wife’s final wish of scattering her ashes from the highest peak in the land.

As of now, it’s currently not clear whether Sony and Amazon intend to move in a completely different direction with the story or to simply rewrite portions, but it does likely mean that we won’t see anything from the project until some time in the late 2020s.
Of course, this isn’t the only Sony property that’s currently in the works, as film adaptations of Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone and Until Dawn are also in the works.
It’s likely we’ll see more TV adaptations of Sony properties outside of God of War as well, as the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us has already proven to be extremely successful (both critically and commercially).
