If it isn’t Rockstar Games facing a lashing from fans, which is all too common these days, then it’s the likes of Bethesda facing the brunt of fans’ ire. Today is a day where the latter dev comes under scrutiny, specifically in relation to that unforgettable – though deeply regrettable – The Elder Scrolls VI announcement.
Five years ago was when the game was first teased. That’s right, five long years, with pretty much bupkis to show for it; rumours have come and gone, but concrete evidence has eluded us all, with Bethesda focusing its sights on Starfield. In some respects, its sights are still upon the sci-fi RPG, however, now that the hype has well and truly died down in spectacular fashion, interest returns to Elder Scrolls once more.

According to PCGamesN’s coverage of an interview with ex-Bethesda designer, Bruce Nesmith, it was revealed that fans were the reason for such a premature Elder Scrolls VI teaser. "[Bethesda] took years of hits for not talking about Elder Scrolls VI. Todd [Howard’s] opinion – one which I share by the way – is that the videogame industry has short memories. Those companies that start touting their games years ahead of time, they screw themselves. The best time to start talking about it is six months before release.”

Nesmith added, “Only the fact that the pitchforks and torches were out got Todd to say ‘Yes we’re going to do Elder Scrolls VI, it’s for real it’ll happen. But I’m betting you don’t hear much in the way of details until six months before release, which is the way it should be.”
It was us all along, we were the villains and not the devs. It’s unthinkable. Yet, that’s the truth and blame that Nesmith is seemingly lying at our collective door. Naturally, fans are calling out Nesmith’s remarks, stating that “12 years for a sequel is pretty crazy”, while also chiming in that saying fans were annoyed is pointing out the obvious – “Well yeah. In what world is 15 years between sequels [okay]? Fans should, and have, the right to be upset.”
Nevertheless, while plenty of gamers are peeved at being called out for their own BS, some are siding with the devs, with one user saying, “Could say the same thing about GTA VI, but we also got RDR II in the interim. Just like we also got Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and Starfield in the interim. I’d say Bethesda is doing better than Rockstar.”
That side-by-side comparison shows, quite clearly, that while both devs have been working tireless, it is indeed Bethesda that’s been churning out more content to keep its other fandoms happy. Does that make it better than Rockstar? That’s for you to decide, not me. However, one thing for certain is that patience is thin no matter which fandom you turn to at the moment, which never bodes well.
