Video game adaptations have a mixed reputation. There are plenty of terrible options to choose from. In fact, you need look no further than Netflix’s new Resident Evil series. There are the mid-grade options like Uncharted, and then there are the rare gems like Sonic The Hedgehog 2.
I’d say that Mortal Kombat falls into the average category. Whilst the script lacked a bit of fine tuning, Mortal Kombat did provide plenty of cool action sequences and perhaps most importantly, it was HBO Max’s most successful film launch upon release. As is the Hollywood way, a sequel was eventually announced and we now know who will be at the helm of Mortal Kombat 2.

Technically, the sequel doesn’t have a title but we’re tentatively calling it Mortal Kombat 2 for now. Deadline has confirmed that Simon McQuoid will return as director, having directed the previous film. Perhaps more excitingly though, Mortal Kombat 2 has a brand new writer onboard who could iron out some of the first film’s plot issues.

Jeremy Slater is set to write Mortal Kombat 2’s screenplay. You’ll probably know Slater best for having written Marvel’s Moon Knight series. Personally, I think this bodes really well for the project. The MCU is having somewhat of a mid-life crisis at the moment but Moon Knight is definitely one of the standout projects of phase four.
Previously, it was announced that iconic character Johnny Cage would likely appear in Mortal Kombat 2. Speaking to ComicBook, Slater said, “Johnny Cage is one of my favourite characters [...] I think if he wasn't included in the sequel at all, it would feel very strange. It's still a little bit up in the air how much he will be included, it's one of the things we're currently working on.” I’m sure fans will be keeping their eye out for casting news.
