Marvel quietly cancels new Deadpool and Wolverine reunion

Apparently even this slam dunk of a project wasn't safe from cancellation

Apparently the incredible box office numbers generated by the Marvel Cinematic Universe hit Deadpool & Wolverine weren’t enough to save the duo from cancellation, as Marvel has just revealed that their latest outing together has already been cancelled.

Thank you in advance to Comicbook’s Cameron Bonomolo for the original source!

Back in November last year, Marvel Comics revealed that a new series featuring two of the most annoying (in-universe, at least) X-Men characters was set to hit store shelves in February, hot off the back of the $1.3 billion worldwide gross of Deadpool & Wolverine.

The new series, titled Weapon X-Men, featured Deadpool, Cable, Wolverine and Thunderbird barely made it to five issues however, as Marvel’s editorial has just announced that it’s already been cancelled.

Marvel Comics editor Tom Brevoort discussed the cancellation in a recent post on his blog.

“So the fact of the matter is that the best chance you have to capture enough of an audience is with issue #1, at the launch. And if you don’t, it’s unlikely that you’re going to suddenly be able to turn things around later,” Brevoort revealed.

“So I’d have liked it if WEAPON X-MEN had been able to go on longer, but I’m also confident that if the numbers are weak now, they won’t be any less week at issue #8 or #12 or whatever.”

Just goes to show that even a slam dunk like this isn’t safe these days, at least where comic book sales are concerned.

I’m sure the editorial at Marvel Comics thought that a series featuring Deadpool and Wolverine would do absolute numbers, but Brevoort’s post makes it sound like the series was doomed immediately following the low sales numbers from its first issue.

Honestly, it’s kind of shocking that the MCU’s success has barely translated into higher sales numbers for Marvel Comics. Makes you wonder how bad things would be for them if the film franchise had also tanked…
