As a series, Grand Theft Auto is many things - action-packed, expansive, and iconic. One thing I don’t think many fans would associate with it though is horror, but as reported by Kotaku, GTA Online’s latest update, The Criminal Enterprises, has unexpectedly brought with it some genuinely spooky stuff.
Before we get into it, bear in mind that there’s spoilers ahead for the game’s newly added campaign missions, so if you haven’t had the chance to play them yourself yet and don’t want to find out what’s to come, maybe scroll away now. But, if you don’t care about spoilers for GTA Online, strap yourselves in, because this is quite the ride.
Before we get into it, take a look at this incredible GTA V mod below, which lets you play as The Boys' Homelander.
In summary, the final new mission in the campaign sends players down to an incredibly creepy bunker full of supposedly sleeping robots with human faces. The power is out, because of course it is, so you have to traverse the whole thing using a flashlight, all while listening to the humanoid machines breathe and twitch. Not terrifying at all. And, predictably, once the power is restored, they’ll all come after you, just to cement the nightmare fuel.

Players on Reddit have been reacting to the mission, with some going as far as to say that they “won’t be sleeping” as a result of it: “Not gonna lie, got a lil jumpscare. I was in first person walking in the dark. Turned the corner and he was right in my face then made that noise at the same time,” wrote catdog199998. “It was downright terrifying exploring the silo once more, only this time being abandoned for half a decade. Even with [three] other people in there with me, we were all feeling pretty eerie, especially since we decided to split up when looking for the fuses. Don't know if it was a bug or intended, but at one point after turning the power back on, we went back to the storage area and one of the cyborgs moved,” said R3DD3Y.
So, I can’t say that this was what any of us were expecting from the new update, but honestly? It’s pretty dang cool. Horror missions aside, it also nerfed one of the game’s most notoriously annoying vehicles, so big wins all round.
