Fans love to create ambitious projects to further draw from the well when it comes to successful games. Grand Theft Auto is one of those series that just keeps giving and inspiring creators to tell their own stories.
With GTA 1991, a team of modders is creating a prequel to one of the most well-loved installments of the franchise, GTA: San Andreas. It’s a vast undertaking that has required work on new character models, textures, and city locations. While the project started out much smaller, in the vein of the Stories spin-offs, it has since grown into a much bigger beast.
While we all wait for GTAVI we have to look everywhere for our next GTA fix
Since we last wrote about the project back in 2022, the forums and Discord for GTA 1991 have seen lots of activity confirming that the game is still on track. With these kinds of projects, it's hard to know if it will get a copyright strike, especially when dealing with Rockstar Games properties, as they’ve been known to come down hard on creators.

The team is promising some bold changes to the base game including a brand new story, but also a feature of drug dealing which wasn’t present in the Rockstar original. This would bring another layer of realism to the world of San Andreas and give players another activity as they break up rival gangs selling, or raid crack houses.
Thankfully, the game is surviving and thriving as the creators are hard at work with character design, though this is proving to be a tricky process as the project lead, deltaCJ, has mentioned the overly long time it takes to simply animate a moving jaw. Even with this timesink, you can tell the excitement is still there and hopefully, we’ll see more of this prequel soon. This is definitely something else to get excited about while we all wait for GTAVI.
