It’s been a hugely successful release week for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II - and it won’t surprise anybody that sales are massively up compared to last year’s rather underwhelming Vanguard. Fans have been hailing the “incredible” campaign, plus the return of classic killstreak rewards.
Perhaps the most popular addition of all has been the new anti-camping tool which has finally solved what might just be one of the franchise’s most infuriating problems. Infinity Ward knew what they were doing, bringing back fan-favourites like Ghost too. MWII always felt like a surefire success and now, it’s had the ‘top-selling opening weekend ever’.

It’s been revealed that MWII has earnt more than $800 million globally in “sell-through” in just the first three days of release, which makes MWII the “No. 1 top-selling opening weekend ever” for the Call of Duty franchise, Activision have announced (Via GameSpot).

The previous record was held by 2011’s Modern Warfare 3 and that record took five days to achieve. Activision also pointed out that MWII’s takings outperformed any film at the box office this year including Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
CEO Bobby Kotick said, “Thank you to our talented team that has created magic through extraordinary artistry and technology, and to the global community of players who find joy and connection through Call of Duty. This milestone belongs to them.” CoD general manager Johanna Faries added, “Thank you, Call of Duty players, for making Modern Warfare II's launch one for the record books as well as the highest grossing entertainment opening of the year. It is our honour and privilege to deliver such a historic launch weekend for the best fans in the world.”
