The Avengers' new leader officially announced, and it's not who we expected

Foe becomes friend

There are so many different iterations of the Avengers these days that I find myself struggling to keep up.

Worry not though, my friend. We’ll get through this together.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson / Captain America who’s seemingly gathering the team together ahead of next year’s Avengers: Doomsday.

It’s about time preparations got underway as I don’t think the team will easily dispatch of the infamous Victor von Doom.

In the world of Marvel Comics though, a very different series of events has unfolded.

Here, the team isn’t facing off against Doom; They’re led by him.

Thunderbolts* is next in line for the MCU.

If you’ve not been keeping up with One World Under Doom they boy, have you missed out on a lot.

As reported by ComicBook, One World Under Doom is Marvel’s first Doom-centric event since 2015’s Secret Wars, and he’s been a busy fella.

Doom has assumed the role of Sorcerer Supreme, the monarch of Latveria and now, an Avenger.

I won’t relay the ins and outs of the entire run because I highly recommend you delve into this storytelling feast yourself.

I can tease what’s in store next though as June will bring us One World Under Doom #5.

It’s here that Emperor Doom will team up with the Avengers which may feel a tad unlikely, but it appears that the two parties share a common foe: Dread Dormammu.

Emperor Doom will assume the position of leader, with Captain America, Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Storm, Captain Marvel, and Spider-Man all following his word.

“Dormammu has come for Doom – and Doom has SURVIVED. Broken, depleted, but having bought the time he needed, Doom ensured victory,” the synopsis teases.

“Now, Earth’s heroes face a choice: They can allow Earth to fall to Dormammu—or they can align with Doom and fight for Earth beside him. Doom is at his highest— with Earth’s heroes behind him, nothing can stop him now. Nothing that is, save for an unexpected return of an old foe.”

The issue will go on sale on 11 June with there expected to be nine instalments in total in the One World Under Doom run.
