Originally developed by Ensemble Studios and published by MacSoft before being picked up by Microsoft/Xbox Game Studios, Age of Mythology is one of the OG real-time strategy games and to this day, fans are still returning to its world.
One of the more recent versions of this OG classic RTS is Age of Mythology: Extended Edition (2014), a remaster of the game initially released in 2002 for PC. According to SteamDB, at the time of writing, Age of Mythology: Extended Edition has garnered over 2,000 concurrent players in the last 24 hours. In the grand scheme of things that may not seem like a lot, but considering its age, this game is still generating more players than some AAA titles that were released much later than this classic.

So, what could be better than experiencing a remaster of the original Age of Mythology, I hear you ask? How about a full remake coming to PC and Xbox? That’s exactly what we're getting with Age of Mythology: Retold, which will be powered by the same engine used for 2020’s Age of Empire III’s Bang Engine. Though, strangely, it won't be powered by Age of Empire IV’s Essence Engine 2.0, but it is what it is. What’s more, all the animations as well as its soundtrack will be recreated from scratch in the upcoming remake.
Advert
Details on Age of Mythology: Retold are vague at this time, but considering that this is a remake we can expect to see improved gameplay, graphics, animations, sound effects, soundtrack, enhanced quality-of-life features and much more. Oh and of course, plenty of epic battles.
We do know that Age of Mythology: Retold will be released for both PC and Xbox. However, with this being an RTS, I wouldn't be surprised if it were to launch on PC first before coming to Xbox. Moreover, as this is a Microsoft-owned property, it will be a safe assumption to make that it will also launch on Xbox Game Pass.
No release date has been announced for Age of Mythology: Retold, but hopefully it will be released at some point during 2024 or early 2025. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we hear of any further developments.
