CD Projekt, the developer of The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, has been a busy boy with its franchise over the last few years. November last year the team began leaving hints that the sequel to its beloved open world action RPG so far aptly titled The Witcher 4 would begin development in 2022. In a financial earnings call it later hinted that the team would be ramping up multiplayer and live service elements for the Witcher series, suggesting they would be a major component of this next game.

CD Projekt aren't the only one to be looking at implementing more online multiplayer and live services into its games. Sony recently announced that it is looking into bringing more live service games to PlayStation, a brand which is most well known for its single player games. However, moving forward it is hoping to bring at least ten new online multiplayer games to the console by 2026.

The Witcher appears to be doing the old switcheroo. While the main game, a typically single player experience is going online, the online multiplayer card game spin off Gwent is apparently going stand alone. As revealed by IGN, alongside its work on The Witcher 4 and improving Cyberpunk 2077, work has begun on a single player version of the Gwent card game under the code name 'Project Golden Nekker'.
In December, Gwent's game director Vladimir Torotsov hinted at the new project. “We want to announce stuff that we’re working on when the time is right, - I’m really excited about this project coming together and I hope you like it as much as I do.”
Meanwhile, Gwent's Communications Lead, Pawel Burza explained how Project Golden Nekker is going to be different from Gwent or any other game released so far. “It’s not another Witcher Tales [game] but something different, - We’re aiming to provide a captivating single-player for players who prefer it over competitive multiplayer Gwent.”
