Set during the first Mongol invasion of Japan, players take control of Jin, a samurai charged with protecting Tsushima island from the horde. Players can opt for direct combat, embodying the honour of the samurai, or take a more underhand approach that, while less lethal, carries the ignominy of fighting unfairly. Its combat system is detailed and designed to keep you engaged as you carve through your opponents, being careful to keep tabs on what they’re each doing and what your response should be.
Beyond the fighting you’ll be exploring a staggeringly beautiful rendition of feudal Japan — barrelling across the landscape on horseback, writing haikus, visiting hot springs, completing platforming challenges and zipping up walls with a grappling hook. The Director’s Cut also includes the Iki Island story expansion, as well as access to the game’s Legends multiplayer mode.
At Amazon, it’s got a massive 4.8 out of 5 average rating from almost 1,000 customer reviews, with customers praising the graphics, gameplay and storyline with equally high regard. “If you like open world games, get this,” said one five-star review. “It's amazing on the PS4, on the PS5 it must look phenomenal. Well worth the money.”
“The atmosphere and the scenery is some of the best and most immersive out of any game I’ve played to date,” said another five-star review. “If you want to start a new game and don’t know which one then play this, you won’t regret it.”

Another added: “I mean, it’s great. I bought because it came with Iki Island, and I have to say it was one of the best DLCs I’ve played. Highly recommend to anyone that loves this game or wants to try it out.” For the uninitiated, DLC stands for ‘downloadable content’ and is used as a catch-all term for modern game expansions.
Not everyone is convinced, although the naysayers are a small minority among Amazon customers. “It was a very dry story,” said one review. “It failed to set the stakes of the story. It relied on the same three story arcs for the entire game and subplots. It is a fine game but nothing much to remember.”
Another said: “After a few hours of playing, I am quite disappointed. For now I feel like I’m playing a fairly successful Assassin's Creed.”
For another stunning PlayStation-exclusive and story-focused action game, check out God of War: Ragnarök for the reduced price of £33.99 at Argos. Another detailed and beautiful open world to explore can be found in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, currently just £15.99 with all the DLCs included at Game.
