'Call Of Duty: Warzone' Doesn't Have More Maps For One Simple Reason

Variety is the spice of life, right? It’s also the spice of any game - no one wants to be doing the same thing over and over again forever (although I see the hypocrisy in me saying this, as a seasoned shiny Pokémon hunter).

Anyway, for that reason, it’s no wonder that Call of Duty: Warzone players have been begging for more maps to go at. Not even necessarily new maps, but access to older ones which were removed from the game in favour of fresh additions. You’d think that it’d be fairly straightforward to incorporate map rotation, but it turns out that it’s not that simple.

Before we go on, be sure to take a look at some of the funniest Warzone wins and fails from Verdansk - the map that's gone, but not forgotten.

As reported by VGC, during an interview with CoD streamer TeeP, Activision’s vice-president of design, Josh Bridge (who spearheads live operations for the entire CoD franchise), explained that despite everyone wanting map rotation to be a thing, the game is just too big.

“So, there’s a technical problem. The install and reinstall sizes are f**king crazy,” he said. “If we pulled out Caldera and said okay, we’re going to drop in Verdansk, it could be like, essentially re-downloading the size of Warzone. And every time we’ve done that, right, we lose players.”

You can’t blame people for being put off by the install sizes - according to IGN, Warzone currently takes up over 120GB of storage on PS5, and around 80GB on PC. Depending on your internet speed, that’s potentially a massive wait, and nobody wants to be drumming their fingers for hours on end to play a game that they already had installed.

Despite the current issues though, it sounds like map rotation could still be introduced sometime in the future: “So that’s where we’ve been looking to the future[,] and putting a lot more effort into how we sort that out on a technical level so that we can have that rotation,” Bridge continued. “We’ve been really looking at it, so we’ll have more to talk about that, but that is ultimately a goal, to ensure that there’s a freshness and a variety of experiences.”

So that’s positive, at the very least. It sounds like there could be some big changes coming to the CoD franchise in general very soon - a recently-spotted Activision job listing hinted at “an extraordinary line up of innovations”, which they’re dubbing “CoD 2.0”. Whether or not this could include Warzone map rotation at all, we’ll just have to wait and see.
