Any good horror movie should leave a lasting impression on the viewer that will be talked about for years. Personally, the more gloomy the ending, the better.
Perhaps one movie that has a gloomy ending resulting in fans still talking about it to this very day, is the 2007 live-action adaptation of the 1980 Stephen King novel The Mist of the same name.
Check out The Mist trailer below!
“After a powerful storm damages their Maine home, David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his young son head into town to gather food and supplies. Soon afterwards, a thick fog rolls in and engulfs the town, trapping the Draytons and others in the grocery store,” reads the synopsis. “Terror mounts as deadly creatures reveal themselves outside, but that may be nothing compared to the threat within, where a zealot (Marcia Gay Harden) calls for a sacrifice.”

Obviously, there were many suggestions from commenters and one movie that was mentioned more than once was the aforementioned, The Mist. Before we proceed, it’s worth mentioning that the Reddit thread is full of spoilers.

“The Mist,” replied BloodFreakFrightmare. “That is definitely one of the bleakest ones I've seen. Just leaves you absolutely empty,” adds BloomAndBreathe.
“I found the ending so bitter it was sorta sweet. Yes, he f****d up. He f****d up unfathomably catastrophically but it was not the eldritch extinction event that the plot thus far had suggested,” exclaimed OneofTheOldBreed. “When the original author of the story, in this case, none other than Stephen King, says that he wished that he came up with the ending featured in the movie adaptation you know that you did good, 1d4Witches responded.
If you want to see what all the fuss is about, The Mist (2007) is currently available to buy or stream on Prime Video and The Mist (2017) TV series is currently available to stream on Netflix in time for the Halloween season.
