Despite being a key figure of the Star Wars franchise, Yoda remains something of a mystery, at least when it comes to his species.
Even if you have never seen a Star Wars movie, you will know the adorable little green creature who fans will of course know as the Jedi Yoda.
In the meantime, check out our interview with the cast of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew below!
Appearing in six of the Star Wars entries and voiced by Frank Oz in the majority of his appearances, Yoda is one of the most recognised fictional characters in movie history.

However, it is shocking to realise that creator George Lucas never really explained what species Yoda belongs to and it has been down to fans to work it out for themselves.
As a Jedi Master and one of the best Force users in history, Yoda is a powerful figure indeed and according to one fan, his species may have direct links to the Jedis themselves.
The discussion took place over on r/StarWars earlier this year when one fan asked, “If you had to give a name to Yoda’s species, what would it be?”
Star Wars fans soon descended and the thread was bombarded with almost 600 comments but it is some of the top rated that make the most sense.

User kraegm wrote, “Best fan theory I’ve read says their species is originally called “Jedi”, like the Sith used to be a species.”
With over 1,000 upvotes, it seems as though this is the most generally accepted theory.
So much so that another user expanded on this idea.
“It has always been my personal headcanon that the name for Yoda’s species is important. Star Wars is a world where everything has a name…” user Goldman250 explained.

“So it’s really weird that Lucas has been insistent on hiding the name of Yoda’s species.
If it didn’t matter, then Lucas would have gone “oh, he’s a Yarian” or something - probably an Ozmian in honour of Frank Oz, because that’s how George does things sometimes (after all, Obi-Wan’s home planet of Stewjon was named after Jon Stewart because Stewart asked him about it).
So I think the name must be a name that matters.”
They went on to explain that Yoda’s species is called the Je’daii.

“Much like the Sith was a species first, I think the Je’daii were the original Force users and creators of the Jedi Order, and over the years the name Je’daii became synonymous with the Order, until the species’ name got forgotten and all people remember is the Jedi.”
Of course, this is still a fan theory but it definitely makes sense. However, the air of mystery surrounding Yoda is exciting nonetheless.
