For a while now, Nightmare on Elm Street fans have wanted a particular star to take on the role of Freddy now that Robert Englund has hung up the gloves. Englund’s final outing as the horror legend was Freddy Vs Jason, the extraordinarily camp and shlocky culmination of two franchises.
Upon retirement, Englund nominated none other than Kevin Bacon to take over the role, and fans loved the idea. Bacon is no stranger to the horror genre, with Stir of Echoes, Hollow Man, and Tremors under his belt. But would he take the role if offered?
Horror fans have been able to live out their nightmares as Freddy in the smash hit game Dead by Daylight
Speaking recently, Kevin Bacon was asked his thoughts on taking on the role of dream killer saying, "Never say never. I mean, I say, 'Never say never,' but I really do follow that. There's very few things that I go, 'Nah, nah.' You just never know."

It’s not a yes, but then it’s not a no. As a lifelong horror fan who grew up watching Freddy terrorise teenagers in their sleep, I could see him taking on the role and making it his own. The kicker here is, does anyone want to see Freddy again? You have to think the answer is a big fat yes, right? Especially as slashers are once again waning in favour of more psychological horror, could a new Nightmare on Elm Street revitalise the slasher sub-genre?
If Bacon did indeed step into the role he would be able to bring his own version of Freddy to a new generation of fans and haunt our dreams with those razor-sharp claws. Some could argue that the franchise needs to be left alone as we now have new icons of horror, but it’s been over ten years since the disappointing remake of Elm Street, so maybe it’s time to try again.
