MCU Spider-Man prequel quietly makes controversial change to our hero's origin

MCU Spider-Man prequel quietly makes controversial change to our hero's origin

Change is coming, but is it necessary?

Whether you’re a Spider-Man fan or not, many like to believe they know Peter Parker’s origin.

It’s one of those once-in-a-million type moments that's ingrained in our minds through pop culture.

But what we think we know is about to be tested.

In a new MCU Spider-Man prequel, Spidey’s origin have been altered ever so slightly.

As you’d expect given how many years we’ve clung to our belief that we know all there is to know about Peter, this is regarded as a controversial alteration.

Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man, a Disney+ series due to air on 29 January 2025, will see Peter bitten by the infamous radioactive spider outside of Midtown High.

Speaking of Marvel, let's watch that Marvel Rivals launch trailer

Typically, the story follows the predictable pattern of Peter going on a school trip where he encounters the spider that gives him a quick nibble.

It’s a location that makes sense given the unusual abilities said spider bestows upon Peter.

But in this animated TV show, the dangerous spider is just randomly outside of the school without any clear reason as to why it’s there.

More changes are on the way, though they’re less jarring than the above.

In Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man, Nico Minoru attends the same high school as Peter; in fact, they become friends.

Despite being a Marvel character, Nico has never been established as a supporting character in Spider-Man.

Yet, when Peter is bitten and faints on the street, it’s Nico and Aunt May who come to his aid.

To compound this alarming change, there’s also the disheartening news that yet another reboot is about to get underway.

If you keep on failing, just keep on trying without properly addressing the issue.

On the flip side of this, fans are delighted for the MCU future of Spidey after a recent update.

Swings and roundabouts, eh?

We’ve yet to watch the first episode of Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man, so maybe the alteration won’t feel quite so wrong when we see it in context of the series.

Let’s all cling to that hope as if it’s Spidey’s very last web.
