Rejoice, Spider-Man fans, for the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Movies (or SPUMM for short) is no more.

The news of its demise has been somewhat exaggerated perhaps, as Sony has not made any official statement on the matter, but an insider has told TheWrap that the writing is on the wall.

According to a recent article from TheWrap’s Umberto Gonzalez, the disappointing pre-sales and the lack of a turnout for a surprise Kraven the Hunter panel at the Comic Con Experience in Brazil may have finally inspired Sony to drop their Spider-Man universe of films.

“They’ve developed what they want to develop for now… It’s really about the next ‘Spider-Man’ film,” the insider revealed.

Over on the r/MarvelStudios_Rumours subreddit, MCU fans discussed their joy at the potential death of the SPUMM franchise.

“Good, it was a mistake from the beginning,” commented user Farhad1_, “The smart thing to do is let Marvel use these characters and introduce them properly in the MCU, every character shouldn’t have their own movie/show.”

The MCU will next bring us Captain America: Brave New World.

“It’s weird watching MCU try to make every third and fourth tier character, popular, and Sony has this whole arsenal of characters that MCU could be using, and they only got together to work on one,” stated user Key_Squash_4403.

“We’re getting subpar MCU Spider-Man movies in my opinion, and we’re getting even more subpar spider-Man villain movies from Sony. Put these two things together and we might have something actually pretty good.”

Alas, if it were only that simple.

Even if these reports are true, which I wouldn’t doubt, Sony won’t give up the rights to Disney without a fight.

And they’re well in their rights to do so, quite literally, as all they have to do is make one live-action Spider-Man film every few years and they’ll retain the film rights to the character (and his rogue gallery) forever.

Although, perhaps, this could lead to another deal of sorts between the two media giants. Would be nice to see Venom and Spidey actually, y’know, interact in a movie?
