Harry Potter fans are already at odds about the potential casting of Harry, Ron and Hermione in the upcoming HBO TV series reboot.
The Harry Potter franchise remains as popular today as it was when the first movie arrived in 2001 with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone inspired by the J.K. Rowling novel.

When we were first introduced to the live-action versions of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger in the 2001 movie, the casting of Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson were perfect choices to take fans on a decade-long journey that would end with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2.

So when the Harry Potter TV series from HBO was announced in 2023, it was not only met with excitement but also apprehension as to who would be cast in the roles to play the beloved characters of the franchise that fans hold so dear.
“What do you guys think of this? I am interested in listening to the general opinion,” asked Redditor Exotic_Ruins,” before sharing a paragraph from the casting notes which was reported on via Deadline.

“We are committed to inclusive, diverse casting,' the casting call notes at the bottom in language that has become an industry standard,” read the casting statement “For every role, please submit qualified performers, without regard to ethnicity, sex, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis protected by law unless otherwise specifically indicated.”
“While I support greater diversity and representation on screen, I’m unsure if this change might be too distracting,” continued Exotic_Ruins. “The idea of a Harry Potter remake is already difficult to accept, and making too many drastic changes could risk straying too far from the original.”
To be fair, this Reddit user makes a fair point. It will be difficult to see other actors play the beloved roles, and whoever is cast will likely face an uphill struggle to be accepted by many fans.
“That appears to be the trend today with reboot/remake shows. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't make Hermione or another major character a different race,” exclaimed Ok_Switch67.

“I don't care about representing a real-world demographic in a fantasy with character descriptions already in place. I hope they stay true to the books as much as possible,” said Dfrickster87.
“Annoying, especially since no one wanted this,” said an agitated Northghost99. However, much of the thread said they’d be happy as long as the best casting choices were made.
“It doesn’t matter who they cast as long as they do their jobs,” counters Adventurous-Bike-484.
“For physical traits, I don’t care as long as Ron/the Weasleys are ginger, I feel like that would be too much of a disruption if they aren’t,” replied tone-of-surprise. “Their red hair is iconic to their characters. I can’t imagine them not being redheads. At the end of the day, I just want the trio to feel like the characters from the books.”
