A whopping 36 years after the first film’s release, Top Gun: Maverick finally released in cinemas last Friday, and it’s safe to say that it’s met (and perhaps even surpassed) the expectations of critics and fans alike. Even though the original was a great standalone movie, Maverick has proven to be the sequel that we never knew we needed.
Don’t just take it from me, though, GAMINGbible’s own James sums it up far better in his review: “I can safely say Top Gun: Maverick is close to perfect”, he wrote. “It’s serious yet silly. It’s visually impressive beyond belief. Most of all, it’s a sequel that honours the past while making the most of what films are capable of in the modern day. A must-see movie for fans, and an epic blockbuster for all.”
While you're here, be sure to take a look at our interview with Top Gun: Maverick's producer and director below.
Considering the immense success that the sequel has had already, it’s not surprising that fans are already wondering if a third Top Gun movie could be on the cards, but according to the producer, we probably shouldn’t get our hopes up. In an interview with Deadline, Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that there’s nothing immediate in the works: “Let’s ride this wave,” he said.

Before that, though, he also gave some insight into why it took so many years for Maverick to come to fruition in the first place: “This was the time that it was going to happen,” he said. “It never really got that close [before]; we never had a script, never had ideas.”
In theory then, perhaps as long as someone can come up with a good idea for another sequel, it’s not totally off the table? To be fair, Bruckheimer didn’t say that it’s never going to happen. Certainly for now though, please don’t hold your breath - we might have another 36 year wait ahead of us.
